Kovalev crushes Cleverly; Enzo & Smith score big KO wins
Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1) became the new WBO Light Heavyweight champion after stopping previously undefeated champion Nathan Cleverly in front of a shocked Welsh crowd tonight.
Kovalev started the fight quickly, throwing big shots from the opening bell while the champion mostly kept a high guard without doing too much. With Kovalev taking the first two rounds, Nathan then began picking up the pace slightly and landed a couple of good right hands before getting caught and dropped at the end of the third. The referee, Terry O'Connor, looked like he stepped in to stop the fight, but instead seemed to help Cleverly back to his corner where it seemed obvious that 60 seconds was never going to be enough recovery time.
The end came swiftly as Kovalev jumped on his opponent at the start of the fourth and O'Connor had no choice but call a halt as Kovalev celebrated with his team. Kovalev scored the twentieth knockout of his career while Cleverly falls to 26-1.
Enzo Maccarinelli (37-6) defeated Ovill McKenzie (21-12) for the Commonwealth Light Heavyweight title in a great back and forth bout on the Cleverly - Kovalev undercard. McKenzie was stopped on his feet in the eleventh round. Both fighters landed good shots throughout the fight and both showed a willingness to dig deep in order to achieve victory.
In the end Enzo prevailed with a beautiful left uppercut which forced the ref to step in as McKenzie stayed on his feet while completely unaware of his surroundings.
Stephen Smith (17-1) scored one of the knockouts of the year after defeating Gary Buckland (27-3) for the British Super Featherweight title.
Smith boxed well from the start with Buckland following him around the ring and struggling to tie him down. In the fifth round Buckland, coming forward, walked onto a fantastic right uppercut and fell face first to the mat with the ref not even bothering to count.
It was a stunning finish and you won't see many better this year.
