I think there could be some truth in this. The contract talks of two years ago done serious damage to the SAF/Rooney relationship. Fergie has been licking Van Persie's arse in every interview this season, and while RVP has deserved all the plaudits, I think there's an element of rubbing it in Rooney's face. He held the club at gunpoint when we had no leverage, now we've moved on to bigger and better things, while Rooney has plateaued. Fergie loves a good grudge

Yeah it was tactical. He had to go with a winger at home and that's why Nani started. Welbeck was brilliant in Madrid so his place was guaranteed. Rooney was kept for when the game opened up.
