WBC Super-Bantamweight champion Abner Mares will move up in weight to take on WBC Featherweight Champion, Daniel Ponce de Leon, on April 20th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Mares who won Showtime's Bantamweight tournament will be looking to become a 3 weight world champion when he takes on Ponce de Leon after winning belts at Bantamweight and Super-Bantamweight. Mares has just come off a title defense where decisioned fellow pound-for-pound standout, Anselmo Moreno, back in November 2012.

Ponce de Leon will be making the first defense of his title which he won by 7th round technical decision over Jhonny Gonzalez last September. Ponce de Leon was supposed to defend against upcoming Puerto Rican contender Jayson Velez in March but the young contender was forced to withdraw through injury.

In the co-feature - Argentine puncher Marcos Maidana is pencilled in to take on the tough Josesito Lopez in a Welterweight bout.

Donaire and Mares asked their respective promoters for each other and got nothing. Fuck GBP and TR.

Both great fights. I think Mares should have sticked to bantam more, but this is also good. I'm affraid he isn't big enough for feather. No questioning his balls tho.
