Joe Joyce After his Biggest Win

Joe Joyce caused the upset of the night for the British Lionhearts against Astana Arlans Kazakhstan and arguably the upset of this season’s World Series of Boxing (WSB) at York Hall on Thursday night. As he won a split decision against the current WSB Heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic, in front of a very pro Kazakhstan support and I was able to speak with him after the fight.
Joyce only started boxing just over four years ago and this was arguably his toughest test to date. He said “It was a close one, but a very good win” and seemed very happy to have beaten such a tough opponent. He said he thinks he may be fighting against the Ukraine Ottamans next on March 1, so looks forward to fighting in front of his home crown once again.
With this win Joyce is now the number one Heavyweight in the WSB and said after the season finishes he will have to do some thinking on whether he wants to carry on in amateur boxing and go to the 2016 Olympics or turn professional. Saying, “It’s a decision I have to make, I’m 27 now so is it right for me to carry on and go to the next Olympics, or is it time for me to turn pro. So I will have to make that decision.”
While at times he looked a bit inexperienced with his defence and getting caught cleanly several times, Joyce did show some great boxing brains, as his jab won him the fight even though he was at a reach disadvantage. Joyce is rare Heavyweight who throws a lot of punches every round and keeps busy, which would put him in great stead for turning pro and he showed on Thursday night that he can take a punch and give one back, which makes for entertaining viewing.
