Sir Alex Ferguson to retire from Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season after 26 years in charge.

Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season after 26 years in charge.

The Scot, 71, has won 38 trophies since taking over from Ron Atkinson on 6 November 1986, including this season's Premier League title.
His haul includes 13 titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

"The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about. It is the right time," Ferguson said.

"It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.

"The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.

Ferguson, who will take on the dual role of director and ambassador for United, praised the people he felt helped him build the club into one of the biggest in the world

"I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential," he added.

"My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

"As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.

"In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team.

"Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy Chief Executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them.

"To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United."

Ferguson is the most successful manager in the history of the British game and famously won a treble in 1999.

He is undergoing a hip operation during the summer.

Bookmakers have made Everton manager David Moyes odds-on favourite to take over at Old Trafford.

The Scot is out of contract in the summer at Goodison Park having delayed talks on a new deal until the end of the season.

Ferguson gave no indication he was thinking over his future when writing Sunday's programme notes against Chelsea.

He said: "I certainly don't have any plans at the moment to walk away from what I believe will be something special."

But rumours of his retirement filtered out after the club's end-of-season players versus coaches golf day at Dunham Massey, Greater Manchester on Tuesday afternoon.

Lawrence Okoye has signed with the San Francisco 49ers after going unselected at the NFL Draft in New York.

The British discus thrower is trying his hand at American Football, despite having never played in a competitive game, after impressing during the scouting combines.

Okoye made it to the final of London 2012 and was on a training camp in the United States when he decided to try out for the NFL, attending a regional scouting combine in Atlanta.

He was impressive enough to move on to the next super combine in Dallas, where all 32 teams had scouts to see him work out.

Those performances were not quite enough to see him selected in the seven round draft at Radio City Music Hall, but soon after the conclusion of the event on Saturday he announced on Twitter that he would be joining the 49ers as an undrafted free agent.

Okoye, who stands 6ft 5ins and weighs in at 310lbs, is expected to play as a defensive lineman but still faces plenty of hurdles to secure a place on the 49ers roster given his lack of experience in the sport.

"It's amazing for me, I'm absolutely delighted how things have worked out," said Okoye. "The 49ers are the best fit in the league for what I am trying to do. This could be a great success story.

"I watched the Super Bowl and it was amazing to see them come back from such a terrible start and be one play away from winning. I want to be part of the organisation's future success and I think they are building a team that can rival any in the NFC and NFL."

Crawley-born linebacker Tom Wort was also ignored during the draft, despite at one point being tabbed as a possible third round pick, but he has signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent.

Wort, unlike Okoye, came through the college ranks in the USA with 33 starts for the Oklahoma Sooners, where he racked up 10 sacks.

The other British player in the 2013 Draft, Manchester's Menelik Watson, was taken on Friday by the Oakland Raiders with the 42nd overall pick.

Andy Murray believes there is a cover up in doping case

British tennis player Andy Murray has expressed his disbelief at the Spanish authorities overseeing cycling scandal Operation Puerto, asking if it is...

British tennis player Andy Murray has expressed his disbelief at the Spanish authorities overseeing cycling scandal Operation Puerto, asking if it is the "biggest cover-up in sports history".

Doctor Eufemiano Fuentes was convicted on Tuesday over his role in supplying blood transfusions to cyclists.

Murray tweeted after a Spanish court ordered 211 blood bags to be destroyed.

"Case is beyond a joke," he said. "Why would court order blood bags to be destroyed? #coverup."

The Spanish anti-doping agency is planning to contest the court's decision to destroy the evidence.
Fuentes' punishment

One-year suspended sentence
Struck off as a medical doctor for four years
Fined 4,650 euros (£3,940)

When police raided Fuentes' offices in 2006, they found bags of frozen blood and plasma.

Anti-doping authorities and international sports bodies want to analyse the bags to see whether they implicate athletes in sports other than cycling, but Judge Julia Patricia Santamaria denied them access and ordered that the bags be destroyed.

Fuentes has previously worked with tennis players, runners, footballers and boxers, although he has not said whether he helped them dope.

A statement issued by the World Anti Doping Authority (Wada) said it hopes this is not the end of the matter.

It read: "Access to this evidence motivated Wada's involvement in this case.

"This would ensure appropriate sports sanction processes against the cheats who used Dr Fuentes's services. The court did consider that his conduct was a crime against public health."

Dick Pound, the former head of Wada, added: "It's embarrassing for Spain. Everybody knows we will be able to uncover quite a bit more doping if the examples are made available."

i am so pleased that goal line technology is finally on its way but i think it should only be the start.

i think the fa needs a complete overhaul. not only the members but the game. one thing i am fed up of is they are so unwilling to change anything, other than the offside rule and extra time, which they have changed more than they should have. i dont even get the point of the new offside, if the keeper is further forward than the striker he is offside, what the **** is that about. you can be played on by the defender but if the keeper goes past him he is irrelevant. anyway, getting a bit off topic there, sorry.

so they have finally changed the goal line technology. but they need to keep going. my biggest issue with the fa is the refereeing. surely there has to be a way of sorting this out. at the very least they could let them be held responsible for their decisions. surely if you got them to speak to the press after the game then they would be able to explain there decision or admit they made a mistake then people would be more respectful of that. the respect campaign for refs is a farce. people respect good referees i dont see why we should be told to respect all of them when some are just a disgrace.

the other main thing they need to change is i think they should start handing out bans for diving. i think they should review incidents of diving like they do fouls. surely if players started getting bans for diving then it would get it out the game pretty sharpish.

anyway i've rambled on enough. what do you guys think? and what would you want sorted if i didnt metion it?

Obviously there's a lot of Rooney hate in England but the facts dont lie. Playing between the midfield and striker this season he's got 16 goals and 16 assists in 35 games. People talk about his early season form (which wasn't that bad because he had a couple injuries) and say he's finished, clearly ignoring he's been United's best player from around December. Hardest working player in the league and one of the deadliest who is capable of genius. Walks into any premier league team easily. Van Persie gets all the credit this season and rightly so, for his goals, but his dip in form was worse than Rooney's, he was way below average in some of those games and never kicked the ball.

Rooney will be at United next season and he'll be a key player yet again on the road to 21. That is all. :hello:
