Background Info

Welcome to the seventheenth installment of the Fights From The Past Scoring League. This league is devoted to scoring old fights (nothing newer than the 1990s). The official outcome of chosen fights may or may not be heavily disputed, and it's up to whoever creates the thread to select the fight he/she wants to score. Not only will this person score the fight, but anyone else who wants to contribute a scorecard may do so at their leisure. Scorecards will be accepted any day and at any time.

As for the content, you can expect to see some fights here so old that they are filmed in black and white. The only condition is all rounds of the fight must be displayed in the video! Consider this a great opportunity to match the history of what actually happened to what you believe should have happened. Also consider it a great opportunity to see how others scored the fight, and why they saw it that way. You'd be surprised how your opinion about a fight can change after paying attention to other people's observations. No single pair of eyes catches everything, so be considerate of other people's opinions (even if you adamantly disagree). Also keep in mind not everyone may be well versed in scoring fights. Simply put, not everyone understands judging criteria. But their opinion is still welcome. By all means feel free to argue your scorecards, just don't insult each other.

Logistics

Ideally you should give a round by round score of the fight, and tally the total at the end. A 3 round example is given below:

Round 1: 10-9 Fighter A
Round 2: 9-10 Fighter B
Round 3: 10-8 Fighter A

Final Score: 29 - 27 Fighter A

If this is too much work for you, so be it. Just throw up your final score. Or if you're feeling extra ambitious, you can write a description below each round score which explains why you scored it the way you did.

There is no time limit on when you have to get this scorecard in.

The Fight
This time we bring you the rematch between two great middleweights: Mike "Bodysnatcher" McCallum and Sumbu "Patrizio" Kalambay. Kalambay won the first match in Italy in '88 by UD, in his first defense of the WBA title. Three years later, the two faced eachother again in Monaco, but this time it was McCallum who was the defending WBA champion. Scores were 116-114, 116-115 for McCallum and 115-114 for Kalambay and the Bodysnatcher retained his title and gained revenge with a narrow split decision. Was it a robbery? You can see for yourself. So, without further talk, I give you:

Round 1

10-9 Kalambay

McCallum had an early edge with a pair of nice combinations to the body, but Kalambay sustained the jab throughout the round, and landed a nice left to the body of his own later on. Can't tell quite yet whether Kalambay is forcing McCallum to move, or whether he's feeling the pressure.

Round 2

10-9 McCallum

"The Body Snatcher" is indeed closing distance, and is picking off Kalambay's jabs now before he can fully extend. Neither fighter taking too many risks, but McCallum lands to the body a handful of times, enough to warrant the nod in this round.

Round 3

10-9 Kalambay

The Italian-translant Kalambay catches McCallum reaching twice and counters very well. He seems to have established his range again, as McCallum is having difficulty finding him with his jab.

Round 4

10-9 McCallum

McCallum really picks up the pace, and Kalambay seems taken aback by it. McCallum scores with a pair of hooks on the inside, and counters a tentative Kalambay to the body several times.

Round 5

10-9 McCallum

The fighters' jabs continue to negate one another on the scorecard, but McCallum continues to pressure Kalambay, and is the only one landing effective shots. Kalambay seems to have slowed down from the sustained body attack.

Round 6

10-9 McCallum

Kalambay improved his workrate, but left himself susceptible to counters with a few uncharacteristic wild hooks. McCallum scores with a nice flurry to end the round.

Round 7

10-9 Kalambay

McCallum is forced to throw single pawing punches as Kalambay gets moving once again. Kalambay lands a thunderous overhand right, which has no effect on his iron-jawed opponent.

Round 8

10-9 Kalambay

Kalambay is no longer a stationary target for McCallum. When he is caught along the ropes with a few shots, he counters well and spins off back into the center of the ring, where he is comfortably controlling the distance.

Round 9

10-9 Kalambay

More of the same from Kalambay for two minutes and 30 seconds, until he seems to run out of gas and loses all snap on his punches. McCallum catches up and lands a few clean shots, but not enough to warrant victory in the round.

Round 10

10-9 McCallum

Kalambay made McCallum miss plenty on the ropes, but didn't land much. McCallum did manage to slip in a reasonable amount of punches, enough to win a very tight round.

Round 11

10-9 Kalambay

Although he isn't moving as much as in previous rounds, Kalambay is going absolutely nowhere near the ropes. Since McCallum isn't putting anything on his jab, Kalambay is able to counter underneath and over top with his with regularity.

Round 12

10-9 Kalambay

Both fighters lay it on the line, but Kalambay is more active, and seems to dictate where McCallum is in the ring down the stretch.

Final scorecard:

115-113 Kalambay

I remember watching the fight earlier this year. I scored it 115-114 for McCallum. Kalambay won alot of the late rounds and put up a very good showing but I thought McCallum put enough of the early rounds in the bag to win the fight, just.

That's exactly how i scored it when i first watched it, i was thinking how was this a close decision ? because Mike McCallum pretty much won almost every one of the first 6 rounds, but then Sumbu Kalambay was starting to really comeback. And i was thinking can Sumbu Kalambay pull off the draw ? but Mike McCallum sealed the deal in the last round.
