In the 1983 Pan -American final Cuban Pablo Romero beat Evander Holyfield. A cuuriosity for me, ( I'm not a big fan of amateur boxing)was that Romero was wearing no headgear. I thought that was obligatory in amateur boxing.Any body have any info?

Head gear wasn't mandatory until the mid 80s.

Yea that is unusual. Should be both wear or neither. 1 with and 1 without however is common in sparring, but that's in the pros.

as an amatuer, holyfield was not really a force to be reckoned with, back then i dont think headgear was mandatory, hence that is why he was not wearing one, holyfield came to his own after a couple of professional fights and to this day still is very competitive as his peers and may in fact regain some type of title that seem to be popping up every other month:):P
