The diminished reigns of Heavyweight Champions post Dempsey and pre Louis is quite remarkable. Not only were the reigns short time wise, but even shorter fight wise. After Dempsey lost his title, the following Champions were crowned:

Gene Tunney – 2 defenses: Dempsey, Heeney – Reign: 1 year & 10 months
Title Vacated
Max Schmeling – 1 defense: Stribling – Reign: 2 years
Jack Sharkey – 0 defenses – Reign: 1 year
*Primo Carnera – 2 defenses: Uzcudun, Loughran – Reign: 1 year
Max Baer – 0 defenses – Reign: 1 year
Jim Braddock – 0 defenses – Reign: 2 years

After Joe Louis won the title, he defended it a record of 25 times. Of the 6 Heavyweight Champions before him, they combined to defend the title a total of 5 times, 1/5th the amount of defenses Louis had. They combined to hold the title for 8 years & 10 months, while Louis held the title for 11 years & 8 months.
